Journal Entry #1: What makes the game fun? an observation in class

“Learning by playing” is the best description of last week’s class. All the games in the class were really fun. PSP and NDS provided portable and light game devices with cute little games. Wii sports and electric guitar of Xbox games tested players’ physical actions and coordinative abilities. The nostalgic games such as Pacman and some other puzzle games really made me remember of the good old times. I love to play games; games can help me to release certain pressures, especially the first-person shooter games, which were great. Games may also fulfill my desires or dreams that will never come true, such as RPG games. Building confidence by games may be one of the reasons why I play games. When I defeated other players online, I feel like I am really strong and triumphant. The above are reasons why I love to play games, and they all could not get rid of one point, that is: fun.

Games provide people not only self-improvement but also experiencing the virtual power and identity exploration. All these combine with fun: people feel fun when they virtually kill a person, learn how to lead a troop, fall into a romance, etc. The whole idea of playing a game makes the game fun. There may be some other fun points of playing a game, such as appreciating the well-illustrated graphics, creative stories or anything else. People find different fun points in the same games. Even adults may find some fun in games for kids or vice versa. Accordingly, it is hard to say what kind of demographic segmentation love to play certain kinds of game. Nowadays, consumers act like chameleons: their thoughts are always exceeding marketers and game planners’ expectations. We can’t predict consumer behaviors by simple categories.

People prefer certain games because of they can have fun in them, and the fun lays in the feeling of gaining something. So, what kind of games do people prefer? It is a hard question again. Every kind of games has its market, and people play games for different reasons and distinctive fun. One important element is very common among any kind of game players, which is the interaction between players. Players of portable games like NDS and PSP have the game topics to talk about, and they can connect each other to play double games if they want. While two persons were playing Wii sports and electric guitar games, they are competing with each other. The platforms can link to the Internet to play with other distant players. What makes Pacman so fun? It was just a primitive and simple game. I would not play this game outside of class. However, I had fun playing Pacman in the class. I discussed and compared my scores with others made the game come to life. The interaction is one of the main fun points of all games.

Online games have become very popular today. The market share of online games has hugely surpassed other single user games, because they provide direct interaction with other people and generate a close to reality interactive environment. People love to connect to people and make friends with people in any kinds of forms. After all, human beings are social animals, and it is our nature to act in that way.
